Joy asked,

Looking through the patterns, I don’t always see instructions for what size thread to use. How do I know this from any pattern that doesn’t specify?

I get this question a lot, and the answer is really easy. It doesn’t really matter what size thread to use, the instructions and stitch counts will all be the same.

For a beginner I recommend size 10 or 20, which is big enough to see easily and to pick out any mistakes, but is on the large size for tatting thread. When you get better you can get smaller thread if you like (size 50 or 80), or not. I personally still like the larger threads, and tat with a lot of size 10 and 20. Remember, the larger the thread number, the smaller the thread.
