This is the first state fair I’ve ever entered, it it was a fascinating lesson in the bureaucracy of crafts. I have no idea about the judging, but getting my doily in and out was a trial.
Anyway, here is the doily I entered, and received second place.
The judge’s comments were: “Please use finer thread. Very consistent stitches. The twisted picots are delightful. This jovial pattern needs more vibrant colors. Please experiment with one shuttle of variegated thread and another of a coordinating solid color. —Z”
The pattern is from the book Tatting from Burda, made in size 10 thread and measures about 40 cm across.
I hope to enter again next year, and already have an idea of what doily I would like to make; one I have been thinking about for some time.
I like the colors, soft and beautiful. It would be perfect in my “tv room”. The colors match wonderfully. Finer thread? Why?
I think it’s lovely.
On the finer thread, I think that’s because size 10 crochet cotton tends to tat up rather…large. Even though it is technically lacewook, it winds up looking a little less like lace and a little more like something macrame.
Historically, I’m not sure what thread size was more common. Maybe that has something to do with it, too?
Congratulations! It must be very exciting to get a second place for your first entry! I’m not sure why the judge would ask for finer thread, but at least he/she knew about twisted picots. : )
Congrats for your 1st entry 2nd place is great!
At least it wasn’t ‘rejected’ for having color. For years at our local fair, if it wasn’t white or ecru, it was going to get nothing.
Wow, that stinks. I like color.
Ah, yes. The bureaucracy of fairs. I’d be willing to try their suggestion of smaller thread, but color is a personal preference. What’s the point of vibrant colors if they don’t match anything in your house and would only end up in a drawer?
Your piece is fabulous!
Stacy, thanks. The doily looks great on the wooden table it was intended for (the one in the pic), which really brings out the earth tones in the thread. I don’t know if they marked me down for the colors, or size of thread, or if they were just comments. Wish I knew.
Congratulations on second place!
I think you doily looks wonderful!!! 🙂
Well, I am impressed! Second for a first time is amazing! Congrats!
Fox : )
I think it’s beautiful!
